In Sickness and in Health

I’m not sure what I did to deserve a man like my Stephen. Since October of last year, my health has been “not so healthy.” I had two surgeries in October and then had to wait until May to have a heart procedure done. Praise God, I seem to be on the upswing of my health issues now. However, I would be remiss not to acknowledge two things: 1. My God is faithful, and 2. I have the best husband in the world.

God has shown up for me time after time—in the darkness of a hospital room, in a cold surgical room, and in a bed of recovery. He has been so faithful! But not only has God been with me in these places, my incredible husband has as well. This man of mine has bathed me, cared for me, washed my hair, changed bandages, kept the house clean, kept up with the laundry, cooked countless dinners, spent an entire month in a hospital room with me, taken me to countless doctor’s appointments, and picked up my prescriptions… the list goes on and on.

I told him just last night that he didn’t know what he was getting into when he married me, yet I have no doubt of the love he has for me. In Ephesians 5:25a, it reads, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…” He is doing just that!

The phrase “in sickness and in health” comes from the traditional Christian marriage vow used to promise lifelong devotion, regardless of future hardships. It emphasizes the unconditional commitment to stand by your partner’s side through unpredictable physical, mental, and emotional challenges. I’m so thankful that God saw fit to send that young 18-year-old girl a man who would change her world, love her more than she loved herself, and love her as Christ loves His church.

In sickness and in health!”

Thank You, Jesus!
