Recently, I was having a conversation with our oldest son. He was basically asking me what things were looking like for his daddy and me when Landon, his baby brother, “leaves the nest.” My reply, “Son, we are taking it one day at a time.” Immediately, when I said those words, the lyrics from an old song we used to sing at church began playing in my head. “One day at a time sweet Jesus, that’s all I’m asking from you. Just give me the strength to do every day what I have to do. Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine. Lord help me today, show me the way, one day at a time!”
As a Christian, I know who holds my future. Ultimately, at the end of my life I have the promise of an eternal home in heaven. But while here, on this earth, taking it one day at a time seems to be the motto for me as of late. February marked 5 years since we moved back to Georgia after being in Colorado for 4 years, and then in Texas for 7. In those 5 years, things haven’t gone the way we had planned for them to. In this season, we have learned and continue to learn “to live small.” What a concept! Not a concept or notion we had in mind. It hasn’t been easy to get used to – not having what you want. But once you realize that God’s plans are greater than any plan we could imagine for ourselves, it takes you to a totally different place. It causes you to focus on what truly matters in life. What does that look like? It looks like taking it one day at a time. One day at a time to:
- Trust in God’s Provision: Learning that each day is a gift from God, trusting that He’ll meet my needs daily.
- Live in the Present: Appreciating the blessings I have today rather than looking back and wishing for what was or worrying about what’s to come.
- Prioritize my Faith: Deepening my relationship with God, and leading others to do the same.
- Seek God’s Guidance: Surrendering all my worries to God through prayer, trusting His guidance for each day.
There is a quote from Abraham Lincoln that says: “The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.” Yes, one day at a time life comes at us. Are you taking life one day at a time? Whether you are or aren’t, the Bible offers numerous verses that provide comfort and assurance regarding our future.
- Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
- Proverbs 16:9: “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
- Psalm 32:8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
- Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
May these verses be a reminder to you that our future is in God’s hands, and He has a plan for each of us that is filled with hope and purpose. By trusting in His guidance, we can find peace and strength as we navigate life’s uncertainties…one day at a time!
