I used to watch a show on TV, hosted by Steve Harvey, called, “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” It was always a good laugh. A couple of weeks ago, I was subbing in a classroom, and the student teacher was using the first part of class to review for a test they were getting ready to take. After completing her review, she asked if anyone had any questions. A kiddo I have known since he was a baby, raised his hand and asked, “Can I play a walk-up song when we start this test, cause I’m about to hit it out of the park!” [Note – walk-up songs are music tracks chosen by athletes to energize themselves, hype the crowd, and create a signature moment as they approach the plate or field.] This kid! Hilarious, yet so confident, excited and ready! Oh, to be filled with such confidence, excitement and eagerness in our spiritual life.
2 Corinthians 8:7 says, “But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
Are we striving to “hit it out of the park,” – to achieve a spiritual home run? The above verse implies that we need to excel in everything. In faith – we need an unshakable trust in God daily. In speech – we need to use words that build up and align with truth. In knowledge – we need to grow in an understanding of God. In Earnestness – we need sincere zeal, not lukewarm devotion. In love – we need to sacrificially care for others.
I’m not sure if this kiddo “hit it out of the park” or not on his test. But one thing I know for sure is that he radiated a profound confidence. Oh, to live a life that radiates such confidence; a life that radiates a Christ-like character with such a profound alignment, that we too can say, “I’m about to hit it out of the park!”
